🔍 How to Identify a Dace (vs Chub & Roach)
The dace is often confused with chub and roach — here's how to tell them apart:
- Body shape: More slender and herring-like than chub or roach — like a miniature tarpon in silhouette
- Fins: The back edge of the dorsal and anal fins is CONCAVE (curved inward). Chub have CONVEX fin edges (curved outward). This is the single most reliable field mark.
- Eyes: Yellowish iris with small dark spots. Roach have red eyes — a key difference.
- Mouth: Small, slightly downward-facing. Upper jaw slightly longer than lower jaw.
- Color: Silver flanks, olive-green back, pale fins often with a delicate coral/pink tinge

Dace are fish of flowing water. They're found in fast-flowing, well-oxygenated rivers across the UK, Europe, and Northern Asia:

Dace are one of the most entertaining fish to target — they're fast, greedy, and strike instantly:
- Best methods: Float fishing (stick float or waggler), trotting, fly fishing with small wet or dry flies
- Best baits: Maggots, casters, bread punch, sweetcorn (for bigger specimens), hemp and tares
- Tackle: Light line (~3 lb), small hooks (size 18–20), delicate floats
