Oscar Fish

The "water puppy" — a 35 cm cichlid with the personality of a dog, the appetite of a garbage disposal, and the waste output of a small horse. Those soulful eyes that follow you across the room, that mouth that begs for food, that habit of rearranging your aquascape because they didn't like where you put the plants. Complete guide: 280L/75gal minimum.

⚠️ 280 Liters MINIMUM — They're SOLD as Babies, Grow to 35 cm

Pet stores sell 5 cm baby Oscars that fit in your palm. Within 12 months, that baby is 25 cm. Within 2 years, 30-35 cm. The #1 reason Oscars are surrendered to fish stores: "it got too big for my tank." ONE Oscar needs 280L/75gal. A pair needs 450L/120gal+. Do NOT buy an Oscar unless you have (or will have) a tank this size. This is non-negotiable.

🐕 The Water Puppy — Personality & Intelligence

Oscars are among the most intelligent freshwater fish. They recognize their owners, beg for food, allow hand-feeding (and petting by trusted owners), watch TV, sulk when ignored, and rearrange the tank decor to their liking. They're also messy eaters who shred food and produce massive waste. Massive filtration is mandatory — canister filter rated for 2× tank volume + 50% weekly water changes. No live plants — Oscars will uproot/destroy everything.

🏥 Hole-in-the-Head (HITH)

HITH is the #1 Oscar killer. Pitting lesions on head and lateral line. Caused by poor water quality, nutritional deficiency, and activated carbon dust. Prevention: pristine water, varied diet (pellets + frozen foods + occasional live), no carbon dust. Treatment: metronidazole + water changes.
