⚠️ Deafness — 30% Affected
Congenital sensorineural deafness affects up to 30% of Dalmatians — ~8% bilaterally deaf (both ears) and ~22% unilaterally deaf (one ear). It's linked to the extreme piebald gene that creates their white coat — the same gene that, when pushed too far, suppresses pigment cells in the inner ear, causing the stria vascularis to degenerate and the cochlea to fail. BAER testing at 6-8 weeks is MANDATORY for all Dalmatian puppies.
Bilaterally deaf puppies require specialized training (hand signals, vibration collars) and extra care — they startle easily and can never be off-leash. They can live full, happy lives with dedicated owners. Unilateral deafness is easily missed — the puppy acts normal but can't localize sound direction. BAER testing is the ONLY way to know.
🪨 HUA — Urinary Stones for LIFE
All Dalmatians carry a genetic defect in purine metabolism — they produce uric acid instead of allantoin, which creates urate crystals and bladder stones. This condition (Hyperuricosuria/HUA) affects every purebred Dalmatian. Management for LIFE: prescription low-purine diet (Hill's u/d or Royal Canin UC), unlimited fresh water (stones form in concentrated urine), frequent bathroom breaks (never hold urine for more than 6 hours), and regular urinalysis. Stones can block the urethra — especially in males, this is a fatal emergency within 24 hours. The LUA (Low Uric Acid) Dalmatian project bred a single Pointer into the gene pool in the 1970s to introduce normal uric acid metabolism. LUA Dalmatians exist but are controversial among purists.
