Morgan Horse
America's first breed β founded by a single, legendary stallion who could out-pull, out-trot, and out-work every other horse in Vermont. That proud arched neck, that compact muscled body, that gentle, eager-to-please temperament. Complete guide: the stallion Figure (aka Justin Morgan) who founded the breed, and why every Morgan traces back to this one horse.
π Breed Overview
πΊπΈ History β One Stallion Founded a Breed
In 1789, Vermont schoolteacher Justin Morgan acquired a small, unremarkable-looking bay colt named Figure as payment for a debt. Figure turned out to be extraordinary: he could out-pull draft horses twice his weight, out-trot Thoroughbreds in races, and work all day without tiring. His offspring inherited his abilities. People stopped asking for "Morgan's horse" β they just called him "the Morgan horse." Figure became known as Justin Morgan (his owner's name), and every registered Morgan today traces to this one stallion. The Morgan is the foundation sire of the American Saddlebred, Standardbred, and Tennessee Walking Horse β and contributed to the Quarter Horse. It is America's oldest breed.
