Zebra Danio
The most important fish in science — and the most cold-tolerant tropical fish in the hobby. Those bold horizontal stripes, that nonstop energy, that incredible regenerative ability that makes them the #1 model organism in genetics labs worldwide. Complete guide: the fish that regenerates its own heart, the GloFish variant, and why they should NEVER be kept with slow-moving fish.
📋 Species Overview
🧬 The Superhero Fish of Science
The Zebra Danio is one of the most important model organisms in scientific research — alongside lab mice and fruit flies. They share 70% of their genome with humans, their embryos are transparent (allowing direct observation of development), and they can regenerate damaged heart tissue, spinal cord, fins, and even parts of their brain. Researchers are studying Zebra Danio regeneration to develop treatments for human heart disease, spinal cord injuries, and blindness. The GloFish (genetically modified fluorescent Danios) were originally created to detect pollution — scientists inserted fluorescent genes from jellyfish and coral that would activate in the presence of toxins.
🐟 The Hyperactive Schooler — NOT for Slow-Moving Fish
Zebra Danios are constantly in motion — darting, chasing, and zipping through the water column. ⚠️ Do NOT keep with slow-moving, long-finned fish like Bettas, Angelfish, or Gouramis — the Danios' hyperactivity will stress them. Excellent tank mates for other fast, active fish. They're voracious eaters and excellent dither fish — their confident, active behavior makes shy fish feel safe enough to come out.
