Goldfish
The world's most abused fish โ the "bowl Goldfish" that was never meant to exist. Goldfish don't "grow to the size of their tank." They're stunted, poisoned by their own waste, and killed slowly by a myth. Complete guide: why a single fancy Goldfish needs 75 liters (20 gallons) minimum, and common Goldfish need 200+ liters โ or a pond.

โ ๏ธ The "Grow to Tank Size" MYTH โ This Kills Goldfish
Goldfish do NOT "grow to the size of their tank." This myth is responsible for more fish suffering than any other belief in the aquarium hobby. A Goldfish in a small tank doesn't stop growing โ its body stops growing but its internal organs DON'T. The fish becomes stunted, deformed, and dies years before its natural lifespan. A properly cared-for Goldfish lives 10-15+ years and reaches 20-35 cm (8-14 inches). The oldest Goldfish on record lived to 43 years. Your "2-year-old bowl Goldfish that died" was killed by its environment โ not old age.
๐ Tank Size โ Fancy vs Common/Comet
- Fancy Goldfish (Fantail, Oranda, Ryukin, Ranchu, etc.): 75 liters (20 gallons) for the FIRST fish, +40 liters (10 gallons) per additional fish.
- Common/Comet/Shubunkin Goldfish: 200+ liters (55 gallons) or a POND. These are pond fish that reach 30-35 cm. They should NEVER be kept in tanks under 200 liters. A 50-cent "feeder Goldfish" is a Common Goldfish that will grow to 30 cm.
๐จ Filtration โ They're Waste Machines
Goldfish have no stomach โ food passes straight through them, producing massive amounts of ammonia-rich waste. A Goldfish produces 3-5ร more waste than a similarly-sized tropical fish. Filtration must be OVER-SIZED: filter rated for at least 2ร the actual tank volume. For example, a 75L tank needs a filter rated for 150L+. Canister filters or large HOBs are ideal. Weekly 30-50% water changes are mandatory โ not optional. In a small or underfiltered tank, ammonia and nitrate levels become toxic within days.
๐จ Goldfish Types โ 15+ Varieties
Single-tail (pond/athletic): Common, Comet, Shubunkin โ fast, long-bodied, reach 25-35 cm. NOT for tanks. Double-tail (fancy): Fantail, Oranda (wen/head growth), Ryukin (humped back), Ranchu/Lionchu (no dorsal fin, wen), Pearlscale (domed scales), Telescope/Moor (protruding eyes), Bubble Eye (fluid sacs under eyes), Celestial Eye (upward-facing eyes). Fancy Goldfish are slower swimmers and should NOT be kept with fast single-tail types โ they'll be outcompeted for food.
๐ฝ๏ธ Diet & Feeding
Goldfish are omnivorous grazers โ they need a varied diet: high-quality sinking pellets (floating food causes swim bladder issues from gulping air), vegetables (blanched peas, zucchini, spinach โ 2-3ร weekly), and occasional frozen/live foods (bloodworms, brine shrimp). Soak dry food before feeding โ it expands in their gut and can cause bloat. Feed 2-3 small meals daily, only what they can eat in 1-2 minutes.
๐ฅ Common Diseases
- Swim Bladder Disorder: #1 issue in fancy Goldfish โ floating upside down, unable to dive. Caused by: gulping air (feed sinking pellets), constipation (feed blanched peas), or anatomical deformity (compressed body shape in fancy breeds). Often chronic and incurable in severely compressed breeds.
- Ammonia Poisoning: Red gills, gasping at surface โ IMMEDIATE large water change. Caused by inadequate filtration / overstocking
- Ich: White spots โ raise temperature + medication
- Dropsy: Pinecone scales โ usually fatal, organ failure

๐ก Fun Facts
Domesticated 1,000+ years ago: Goldfish were first domesticated in ancient China during the Jin Dynasty (265-420 CE) from wild Prussian carp. They're one of the oldest domesticated fish species โ bred for color for over 1,700 years.
The 43-year-old Goldfish: The oldest Goldfish on record, named Tish, lived to 43 years (1956-1999) in the UK. Tish was won at a fairground and was buried in a matchbox โ proving what Goldfish with proper care can achieve.
3-second memory is a MYTH: Goldfish have been scientifically proven to have memories lasting months, not seconds. They can recognize their owners, learn tricks, distinguish music genres, and remember feeding times.
No stomach โ constant grazers: Goldfish lack a true stomach and cannot store food. They must graze continuously โ which is why they always seem hungry and produce so much waste so quickly.
