German Blue Ram
The jewel of the dwarf cichlid world — electric blue speckles, ruby-red eyes, and a personality that fills a tank. Those iridescent blue spots scattered across a gold body, those black markings, that constant gentle foraging. Complete guide: why Rams NEED soft, acidic, WARM water (28-30°C) — and why most die within weeks when kept in standard community tank conditions.
📋 Species Overview
⚠️ Why Rams Die in "Normal" Tanks
German Blue Rams are NOT beginner fish. They require VERY specific water conditions that most community tanks don't provide: soft water (GH 1-5, KH 0-3), acidic pH (5.5-6.5), and HIGH temperature (28-30°C / 82-86°F). In hard, alkaline, or cooler water, Rams become stressed, lose color, stop eating, and die — often within 2-3 weeks. RO water or rainwater mixing is often necessary. Also: many commercially-bred Rams are weak and inbred. Source from reputable breeders, not big-box stores.
🐟 Bolivian Ram — The Hardier Alternative
If you want a dwarf cichlid but can't provide the Ram's demanding conditions, get a Bolivian Ram (Mikrogeophagus altispinosus). Slightly larger, less colorful, but MUCH hardier — tolerates standard community tank parameters (24-27°C, pH 6.5-7.5).
