Complete guide: why Discus are NOT for beginners (RO water, 28-30°C, 3+ water changes WEEKLY), the "Discus plague," and why a group of 6+ costs more than some people's monthly rent.
📋 Species Overview
⚠️ NOT for Beginners — Expert-Level Care
Discus are NOT a beginner fish. They require: RO or very soft water (GH 1-4, pH 5.5-6.8), 28-30°C constant temperature, 3+ large water changes WEEKLY (30-50% each), a group of 6+ (they're schooling cichlids that need social hierarchy), and a varied diet of frozen foods + high-quality pellets. Discus in hard, cool, dirty water become dark, refuse to eat, and die. They also cost $50-$500+ each. A group of 6 = $300-$3,000+ in fish alone.
🐟 The "Discus Plague" & Disease
Discus are highly susceptible to Hexamita (hole-in-the-head), gill flukes, intestinal flagellates, and bacterial infections. Metronidazole and praziquantel are essential medications for any Discus keeper. Quarantine is MANDATORY — 4-6 weeks minimum for all new Discus. A single infected fish introduced to a healthy group can wipe out the entire tank.
