Complete guide: how this fish went from unknown to endangered in months, and what it needs to thrive in a nano aquarium.
📋 Species Overview
🌌 Discovered in 2006 — Almost Extinct by 2007
The Celestial Pearl Danio (CPD) was discovered in a single isolated pond system in Myanmar in 2006. Within months of its scientific description, the aquarium trade had collected so many wild specimens that the species faced extinction in the wild. The Myanmar government banned export by 2007. Today, virtually all CPDs in the hobby are captive-bred — a conservation success story born from initial disaster. They're now one of the most popular nano fish in the world.
🐟 Shy Jewels — Heavily Planted Tank Essential
CPDs are extremely shy — they need a densely planted tank with floating plants to feel secure. Without plants, they hide constantly and you'll never see their colors. Male display behavior is spectacular: males circle each other, flare fins, and display intense coloration in dominance contests. Keep 8-10+ in a species-only nano tank for the best display. Excellent tank mates: Cherry Shrimp, small snails. Avoid boisterous fish that will outcompete them for food.
