Clown Loach
The giant, striped, clicking comedian of the aquarium — sold as a cute 3 cm baby that grows to a 30 cm tankbuster. Those bold orange and black stripes, those playful antics, that audible CLICKING sound they make when happy. Complete guide: why Clown Loaches are the MOST inappropriately sold fish after Common Plecos, the 570L/150gal minimum for a group, and their extreme ich vulnerability.
📋 Species Overview
⚠️ 30 cm / 570 Liters — The Tankbuster Reality
Pet stores sell 3 cm baby Clown Loaches for $5. They grow to 30 cm (12 inches). They live 20-30+ years. They MUST be in groups of 5+. A group of 5 adult Clown Loaches needs 570+ liters (150+ gallons). Do NOT buy Clown Loaches unless you have or are planning a truly massive aquarium. The vast majority die prematurely in tanks that are far too small — living only 2-4 years instead of their potential 30+.
🔊 The Clicking Sound — Communication
Clown Loaches make audible clicking sounds — produced by grinding their pharyngeal teeth. They click when excited (feeding time), during social dominance displays, and when stressed. It's one of the few fish sounds you can hear from across the room.
⚠️ Extreme Ich Vulnerability — Treat CAREFULLY
Clown Loaches are scaleless fish — they have tiny, embedded scales that offer minimal protection. This makes them EXTREMELY vulnerable to Ich (white spot disease) — often the first fish in a community tank to show symptoms. Treatment warning: most Ich medications contain copper, malachite green, or formalin — ALL of which are toxic to scaleless fish. ALWAYS dose at HALF strength for Clown Loaches. Better: treat with heat (raise to 30°C/86°F slowly) + aquarium salt at low doses. Prevention through quarantine is critical.
