Manx Cat
The tailless wonder of the Isle of Man โ a cat that hops like a rabbit and carries a devastating genetic burden. Those round rumps, that muscular arched back. Complete guide: the Manx Syndrome (spina bifida), the 4 tail types, why homozygous embryos die in utero, and why this gene is NOTHING like the Japanese Bobtail gene.
๐ Breed Overview
โ ๏ธ Manx Syndrome โ The Fatal Genetic Cost
The same dominant gene that creates taillessness also shortens the spine โ sometimes catastrophically. Manx Syndrome (spina bifida) causes fused vertebrae, exposed spinal cord, incontinence, hind-leg paralysis, and chronic pain. Affected kittens must be euthanized. Homozygous embryos (M/M) die in utero โ 25% of litter lost. All Manx are heterozygous (M/m). Ethical breeders NEVER breed two completely tailless cats together. Compare to Japanese Bobtail: completely different gene, recessive, NO spinal defects.
The 4 tail types: Rumpy (no tail), Rumpy-riser (small bump), Stumpy (partial tail 1-6 vertebrae), Longy (nearly normal). The Cymric is the longhaired Manx โ same gene, same risks.
