Complete guide: the ancient Thai breed so exclusive that commoners were forbidden to own them (penalty: death), and virtually unknown in the West until the 1990s.
📋 Breed Overview
📖 About the Khao Manee
The Khao Manee (Thai for "white gem") was the most exclusive of Siamese royal cats — kept exclusively by Kings of Siam. Commoners were forbidden to own them — the penalty was death. This exclusivity kept the breed genetically pure but nearly caused extinction when the Thai monarchy fell in 1932. Virtually unknown in the West until the 1990s. TICA recognized in 2012. PURE WHITE only (any color marking = disqualifying). Odd-eyed Khao Manee (one blue, one gold) is most prized — "diamond eye." ⚠️ Deafness: Like all white cats with blue eyes, elevated congenital deafness risk — BAER testing recommended.
